Therapy with Josh
Psychotherapy is a portrayed in many ways in our culture these days. As a panacea, a hoax, a cult, or a cure. In some circumstances those may be true. But I like to think of therapy in another way. As a process. A process of letting yourself be seen honestly by yourself, in the care of a skilled non-judgmental witness who can provide direction and feedback. I practice Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, a rigorously researched approach under the Behavioral Therapy umbrella. It uses values exploration, metaphor, mindfulness techniques, and behavioral activation to enhance psychological flexibility and reduce avoidance activities. The focus is on living a great life, not trying to feel great all the time. As a licensed mental health professional with decades of experience, I am also able to evaluate for, diagnose, and treat mental health conditions in the DSM. While diagnosis can be helpful, I prefer to let it fade into the background and focus on the human being in front of me. In my many years of practice, while I have collected many techniques and tools, I find the most effective one is offering my unwavering presence and occasionally sharing my own lived experience when it might help. An appointment with me is conversational and positive. You will leave with new insight and some action steps that I will hold you accountable to.
